Have a question on my rooster |
Lead | ||
|
O.K. I noticed today that my rooster is getting alittle agressive with the hen. He jumps up at her and acts like he is going to peck her. Is he just trying to
let her know who is boss? Also, is one to one or do rooster's need more than one hen to mate with?? Do rooster's want to mate all the time or is it
seasonal?

Roosters will mate as often as they can, year round, day or night. For a healthy rooster situation, I would have one roo to a minimum of 3 hens, 6 hens would
be even better.
He might be acting out on some frustration. Is the hen the top hen in the pecking order? If so, he may not like her being incharge and he might be trying to change the dynamics. It is not normal for them to show aggression to their hens on a normal basis, so something is making him act out. Let me know what you think it could be and we can work on resolutions from there. (dang, that sounded so like a school paper, I really didn't mean it to read that way! )

Deb the rooster I'm referring to is the banty chicken. I only have one rooster and one hen. These are the d'uccle bantams. I watched them again today
and it sort of looks like play acting. Now I'm not sure.... The rooster would jump alittle off the ground and then the hen would do that as well. Then she
would get close to him and they would have a mini stare down. They were hatched on March 20th. Are they too young to be wanting to mate?

Oh if you're talking about chicks - that sounds like pretty normal behaviour Susan.
Nothing to worry about !! Have you got any pics of them for us? Love Debs x |

Oh yes, that is perfectly normal for chicks. I thought you were talking about a grown roo. They are just learning proper chicken behaviors right now.

Hey Debs...long time no see.
I will get the pics this week. They are so cute. The rooster has little tuffs of feathers around his face. His tail is long and erect. And the chickens claws are too cute with all the feathers on them. The color is porcelain. But it looks like a light blueish grey with some buff color in it. When will they be grown adult chickens? Will the hen start laying eggs around five months? Also, do you think there will be a problem with only one hen for the rooster? Will I need to separate him? I'd like the hen hatch some chicks. I just don't want her to get tore up by the rooster. Also, when will the rooster start crowing? What am I doing wrong when I get through and hit the post button...it always shows up with an edit on my post. Susan |

Hmmm, I'm not seeing the edit announcement you are. I do see the little edit option at the bottom. Odd.
They sound adorable and yes, please post some pics. Those are the right colors for porcelain. Could you put some other hens in with the two of them and just make sure they lay a different colored egg/size from her????? That would give him others to admire also. |

you might find with them being pure breeds that they we will be slower to come into lay than other chickens.
I have one hen with two roos and she's not cut up at all - they are a very gentle breed - but if you do get concerned to as Deb suggests and put another girl in with them. Can't wait for pics! Debs x |

Oh I hope your right Debs. They both seem pretty gentle. I wasn't sure about putting the banties with the larger girls. I am afraid they would get hurt
being so much smaller. I do have one hen, Dovie, that is the smallest hen. She is the Japanese Yokohamas chicken. BUT she is the top hen in the group and
pretty aggressive.
I'm still trying to get Rick to build me some chicken tractors so the girls can be outside more. I was going to get Rick to hold the banties so I could get a good picture of them today, but he is outside with the chain saw cutting up the large branches that broke off the trees last night when the storm came through. Man it was pretty bad. Luckliy we didn't lose power like some areas did. Susan |

I haven't forgotten the pics...I can't find the usb cable to hook up to my computer. My son gave me one but it doesn't have the right end to plug
into my camera. I just haven't found the time to go to the Micro center to get a cable. I don't think Walmart would have this.
